2020 has been quite a ride. And with a new year just around the corner, many people are preparing for a fresh start. Resolutions are cool, but how about setting intentions for the new year instead? 

What is an intention? Google would say “an aim or plan.” I would say it is a mental state that represents your commitment to carry out how you act or experience something. In short, it is purposefully deciding how you want to feel. 

Why would I set an intention instead of just setting a goal? Isn’t that the same thing? Not really. Goals are more concrete while intentions are more fluid. 

When I say fluid, I mean that one single intention could be carried out in several different ways. For example, one of my intentions for the new year is “I am well-rested and energized.” I can carry out this intention by getting the right amount of sleep, making sure I eat the right foods and cutting off my electronics devices at an appropriate time. 

Intentions are not as rigid as goals and can be easily adjusted. They are also a great way to restructure and reframe your thoughts.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) doesn’t always look the same in youth. It can show up as anxiety, withdrawal, anger, or even academic struggles. For marginalized youth, the effects of trauma are often compounded by systemic barriers, discrimination, and lack of access to mental health resources.

In observance of this day, let’s:
-  Start conversations about trauma and healing
-  Advocate for trauma-informed care in schools and youth programs
-  Support organizations that uplift and empower youth mental health

Every young person deserves to feel safe, seen, and supported. Healing is possible and awareness is the first step.
