A few FAQs:

  • The most common mental health problems in men are depression, anxiety, panic disorder and/or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
  • Mental health issues are often less prevalent in men compared to women. Men with mental illnesses are also less likely to have received treatment compared to women with mental illnesses. However, men are more likely to turn to substance abuse and commit suicide than women.
  • While mental illnesses can apply to anyone regardless of gender, men tend to exhibit some symptoms more than women, including irritability, sudden anger, risk-taking, impulsiveness, and overall increased aggression. They may also show escapist behavior, distracting themselves with substances or work.
  • The highest suicide rates are often of men in minority groups, such as LGBTQ+ men, war veterans, and those with lower incomes.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) doesn’t always look the same in youth. It can show up as anxiety, withdrawal, anger, or even academic struggles. For marginalized youth, the effects of trauma are often compounded by systemic barriers, discrimination, and lack of access to mental health resources.
